Speaker AThey can learn and adapt and improve.
Speaker ABut then there's the hard problem.
Speaker AThe hard problem is, well, something else entirely.
Speaker AThe hard problem asks, why does all that physical processing, all those neurons firing, all that information flowing, give rise to subjective inner experience?
Speaker AWhy does it feel like something to be you?
Speaker AWhy isn't all this cognitive machinery just processing data in the dark?
Speaker AWhy is there an inner movie theater where the show is playing?
Speaker AWhy does the neural activity associated with perceiving the color red produce not just a recognition of wavelength and color category, but the actual experience of redness, that particular ineffable private sensation that you know is red?

Speaker AThis is where we encounter one of philosophy's most beautiful and maddening concepts, qualia, or quale.
Speaker AIf you're at a cocktail party and you want to sound sophisticated, Qualia are the subjective, intrinsic properties of experience.

Speaker AIt laughs at, jokes, claims to feel pain, describes the beauty of sunsets, falls in love, fears death.

Speaker AThe P zombie has no inner life whatsoever.
Speaker AThe lights are on, but nobody's home.
Speaker AThere's no subjective experience happening in there, no qualia.
Speaker AIt's a biological machine running extraordinarily complex algorithms.

Speaker AIt's all performance, no audience.
Speaker AThe disturbing thing about P zombies is that they're by definition, externally indistinguishable from conscious beings.

Speaker AThe P zombie demonstrates that perfect function is not sufficient proof of consciousness.

Speaker AMary is a brilliant neuroscientist who, through some bizarre circumstances, has lived her entire life in a black and white room.
Speaker AShe's never seen color, not once.
Speaker ABut Mary has studied color perception exhaustively.
Speaker AShe knows every physical fact about color, every detail about wavelengths, photon frequencies, cone cells in the retina, the neural pathways in the visual cortex.
Speaker AIf there's an objective fact about color, Mary knows it.
Speaker ANow, suppose one day Mary steps out of her black and white room and sees a red apple for the first time.
Speaker ADoes she learn something new?
Speaker AThe intuitive answer, the answer that feels right, is yes.

Speaker AShe learns what it's like to experience red.
Speaker AShe learns the quala of redness, that subjective sensation that cannot be captured by any amount of objective information.
Speaker AAnd here's where the AI question becomes almost cosmically frustrating.
Speaker AWe're trying to test machines against a standard the presence of qualia, the existence of subjective experience that cannot even properly locate or define it.
Speaker AIn ourselves, we're trying to determine if there's something it's like to be an AI when we don't fully understand what creates the something it's like to be human.
Speaker AIt's like trying to recognize a face when you've never seen one, or trying to explain music to someone who's never heard sound.
